Group Discussion > Question About Black Jade

I hope it is ok to jump in here and ask for some help..

I just purchase a few Chinese snuff bottles.. They were sold to me as agate, but I believe may be black jade..

I think the black body of the bottles are black ( nephrite ? ) jade.. The white inclussions in the body of the bottles appear correct for black jade... But, the grey colored cameo carvings are puzzling, and they match the stoppers.. I am confused about the grey color of the cameo carvings..

I have seen Lingbi stone that is described as coming with different shades of white.. Perhaps this is Lingbi stone ?

Does anyone know someone that could have a look at these pics and comment if the grey color is one they have seen in black jade ?

I do not have these in my hands yet, so maybe there is a lighting issue going on with the seller, but the cameo carvings appear grey color that puzzles me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

A specific gravity test would tell you if it's jade or agate. Agate is in the 2.65 range while jades are either 2.97-3.03 (nephrite) or 3.33-3.40 (jadeite).
